In the spring of 2005, an extraordinary young woman joined the sisterhood of Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc. Jennifer “Frďs” Chow was one of two young women who were inducted into the Theta Chapter’s Iota class of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Every sister at Theta Chapter was blessed to have her in our lives.

June 28th, 2006 will be remembered as a sad day, for it was the day that Jenn lost her battle with liver cancer, becoming an angel to us all. From the day she was diagnosed, she exemplified what it meant to be a true fighter. She fought courageously throughout her struggle, all while maintaining a positive and optimistic outlook on life. When she first told me over the phone, she kept on reassuring me that she would be okay. Her beautiful smile never left her face, even at the most trying and arduous of times. She never allowed the disease to control her life.

She was an amazing person that will be remembered by all; she was not just there for me but for everyone else as well. She was one of the hardest working sisters at the Theta Chapter. Throughout her college career, she maintained a G.P.A. of 3.75, majoring in Mathematics while actively participating as a member of Sigma Psi Zeta. Jenn never let her diagnosis prevent her from living her life. Despite medical treatment, she would routinely travel to UMass to visit the sisters, even accompanying us on road trips. At the end of May, she even made a painstaking trip to UMass to support the seven graduating seniors at their commencement.

I was one of the few people who not only had the opportunity to know her as a sister but as an individual. Our shared love of food bonded us together and began our everlasting and special friendship. The only one living on the first floor of the Sigma House, Jenn sometimes felt lonely at night, so she’d come upstairs and we would watch the Food Network for hours, often discussing the types of food we wanted to eat. Iron Chef was our favorite show - if we missed the 11:00 p.m. show, we would stay up until 3:00 a.m. to catch the repeat. We promised each other that this summer, we would travel to NYC to Iron Chef Morimoto’s Restaurant. Room #2 at the Sigma House was not only my room, but hers as well.

Several weeks prior to her passing, she told me that after taking a semester off and being in & out of the hospital, she wanted to transfer to Rivier College in her hometown of Nashua, NH. She told me that she had a new goal in life. After her personal experience, she became inspired to pursue pediatric nursing because of her passion to help children. Her heart of gold and her love of life is what made her want to help others fight. The world has suffered a great loss.

Although she was only 20-years-old, she left a lasting impression on everyone who was fortunate enough to cross her path. She was a loving, down-to-Earth, determined, independent, inspirational, ready-to-have-fun type of girl. Her passing has left a void in all of our hearts. To me, she was a sister and my best friend. I will miss you always, Jenn.
